My father and I just finsihed up a 3 day trip to camp at Elk Neck State Park in Maryland. This is also near Conowingo Dam which spans the Susquehanna River just above where it enteres the Chesapeake Bay. This was our first time to Elk Neck park and it was a pretty nice place. The fall colors were at their peak but unfortunatly the sun didn’t shine the entire time, but I managed to get just a few nice shots of the foliage. The main reason we stayed at this park was it’s proximity to the Conowingo Dam. The dam is used to generate electric so when it’s running it tends to churn out some injured or dead fish which many eagles fish for. If you have never taken a picture of a bald eagle or have been to this location many times before it’s always recommended o visit this spot. When the action is on it can be incredibly exciting and there is usually a camaraderie of other photographers that you meet. This was only my second time visiting and there were photographers welcoming me back that I had met last year, and a few new guys I met this year. Check out some of their pictures:

Overall it’s a great experience and I’m hoping to try to make it back a few more times this season, now on to a few of my favorite shots.

That first shot of the bald eagle is stunning! Such a magnificent creature.
Great series! I visited Conowingo dam yesterday in route back to Washington. I saw two Bald Eagles and have been anxious to photograph them of late. Any suggestions as to when they’ll be most active? Thanks again!
Thanks Travis, usually the best time to see the most eagles is around November. That is when they are in their greatest numbers and are the most active. I’m guessing you can find some there any time of the year like but early winter is the best for the “action”
i go to Conowingo all the time its a beautiful place! ( i live about 20 mins from it) i saw a snapping turtle hding in a litle pond so to speak coverd with duckweed and a water snake, black crowned night herons, eagles,,,,,,ive never seen any king fishers there ( yet)
BTW there are plenty of eagles in Loch Raven Resevoir also ( best in the winter)
