Christian Hunold
I live and work in Philadelphia where I teach environmental politics at Drexel University. Compared to the hard work of being a scholar and teacher, wildlife photography is pure, carefree joy. I strive to make images that convey the intimacy of my encounters with wildlife. Besides a desire to share this emotional connection to nonhuman nature, I have no particular “approach” to photographing wildlife. I have a no-nonsense relationship with color and composition, shaped largely by my experience as a newspaper photographer in my youth; yet my work isn’t documentary in the sense of the field guide school of nature photography. I prefer to work at near to medium distances using a 300mm lens and a monopod. I can’t bring myself to shoot from inside a car. 14-bit RAW is amazing. Getting to know a place makes a big difference. That’s about it for technique. Showing up is half the battle!
